Locksmith tools cannot be used by just about anyone – they require a keen eye for detail as they involve working with tiny parts and mechanisms of a lock; deft hands and great skills, which only a trained locksmith would have. Since there are literally dozens of tools used by locksmiths for various purposes, in this article, we discuss 5 of the most common tools used for a specific purpose – lock picking.

Lock picking is the most common of all locksmith tasks; it involves opening a locked door. In a lockout situation, it is much better to have a locksmith try to open the lock first, using lock picking tools without prying the door open. Here are the main tools of a locksmith used for lock picking.

Plug Spinners – Plug spinners are used by locksmiths to lift, rotate and move the plug in order to put it back into an unlocked state. A locksmith would require a proper understanding of the accurate positioning of the various components of the lock in order to use this tool.

Computerized Picks – Computerized picks are used for more complex lock types such as combination systems. These instruments are made of steel and can configure up to six pins and disc patterns with ease.

Tension Wrenches – Tension wrenches are tools that control the amount of turning pressure that the locksmith needs to apply in order to access the shear line. Typically, locksmiths use three types of torsion wrenches – rigid, light and medium.

 Key Extractors – Key extractors are locksmith tools that are used to remove broken keys or key parts. They are also used to remove any foreign materials that are wedged into the lock cylinder.

Electric Pick Guns – Electric pick guns are small electrically powered drills. Locksmiths generally use a range of picks of different sizes. The picks are easy to replace.

These are the most common tools used by locksmiths for lock pickings. Locksmiths also use tools such as key cutters, deadbolt installation kits, locksmith hammers, router drills and more, for key cutting, lock installation and repair.
